FAQ on NPC, a question. Crafters cannot be NPCs.

NPCs must be non-ranking positions. Blue and green riders can be NPCs. Crafters cannot be NPCs.

I've got a question for folks and right now I'm having a writer's block, the person I'm thinking of is a new posted staff member, comes from Seaview Hold and the Dolphincrafthall background. Found out he wasn't made for the sea craft, 'never got his sea legs', he just found too much for him to handle at sea, he learn how to swim, but never became an apprentice to the Dolphincrafthall, Only one of the family of four not to follow in the footsteps, directly into sea craft. :banghead:
But found out that he like to help in the kitchen, found he like to make bread, in other words he was an early morning person. He stayed and with help learned all he could from the jouneywoman baker, learn the ways around the kitchen, and that person want to send him on to the Baker Hall in Ista Hold if I'm reading right. That were I'm stalled.

He just a minor staffer but I was thinking he could play a bit in my story, if my PC get OK here. :?:

If I understand what you've said, Ginny, he only worked in the kitchen - he never formally apprenticed anywhere, so he's not a crafter. In which case, he can be an NPC.

If you plan for him to enter a craft eventually, however, remember that he must do so BEFORE he's 14.

He is 12 and was to be apprenticed to the Dolphin Craft Hall, but something happen during a trip to visit his oldest sister who espouse a son of a FarmCrafter they lived in a cot hold inland of Seaview Minor. Not that I want to let the "cat out of the bag" but its something that comes to mind. :evil7:

The women in the kitchens in Dragonsinger weren't retired. That was their job.

The question is: can Pern afford retirement?

Well in the book Elgon (sp) visit the ones who are retired from the craft, for fishing is hard on the hands and bodies, they perhaps could be doing 'light work' around the hold or hall. Or could they work as supervisors?

I'm thinks all hands are need at the smaller holds, like helping keep an eye on the younger ones, or finding something else to do. Hard typing with cat sleeping on my lap,.

Depend on what skill they have, they could help in the archives, or help with example sorting of dry herbs.

And yet, all these things you've mentioned, are still jobs and tasks. It's not retirement. :)

No I think they called light duties, something to keep them useful to the Hold/Hall/Weyr, and something that would not tired them out. They are in a way earning their keep, but also they have knowledge that could help in a time of need. Like the time the flu during Moreta's times, the oldest (elderly), were helping by reading the old records, Rill was think if hit Fort Hold, they could help by putting straw in floor beds, one knew the patterns for the Fort's Hold special cloth.
